Tragedy struck Burnsville, Minnesota, as two police officers and a paramedic were fatally shot on Sunday morning.

Authorities were called to a residence on 33rd Avenue South and East 126th Street in Burnsville, just west of the Interstate 35E – Highway 77 interchange, around 1:50 a.m. Superintendent Drew Evans of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension revealed that officers responded to a report of an armed suspect barricaded inside the home, along with seven young children aged 2 to 15.

Efforts to negotiate with the suspect spanned several hours. Backup from paramedics was called in at approximately 5 a.m. However, the situation quickly escalated when the suspect opened fire, prompting dispatch to order everyone to stay back.

The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed

Among the victims were officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, along with firefighter/paramedic Adam Finseth. Sgt. Adam Medlicott of the Burnsville Police Department was also shot but is expected to recover. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was declared dead around 8 a.m.

According to Evans

According to Evans, the exact sequence of events leading to the exchange of gunfire remains unclear. He noted, “Several officers did return fire. I will note this individual had several guns and large amounts of ammunition.”

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident to determine the motive behind the attack and how the events unfolded.
